THE CONTAINER HOMES
Aravali Foothills, Haryana
Conceived in the aftermath of the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, The Container Homes emerged from a simple but urgent need – to inhabit open land with immediacy, calmness and permanence, without constructing a conventional house.
Located along the foothills of the Aravali range, the site already possessed a mature landscape of fruit trees, dense foliage and open greens that had evolved over time. Building restrictions within the eco-sensitive zone encouraged an alternative approach to inhabitation – one that touched the land lightly while still offering the emotional permanence of a home.
Rather than treating the containers as architectural objects, the project reinterprets them as quiet structural shells placed within a larger landscape ecosystem. Deep bamboo canopies, timber-lined interiors, shaded decks and fully glazed edges dissolve the hardness typically associated with container construction, allowing the architecture to recede into the site.
The retreat is organised as three independent blocks distributed across the landscape.
Block A accommodates the client and his wife within two 40-foot containers stitched together longitudinally to create a fluid studio-style living environment. The space remains deliberately minimal – prioritising openness, natural light and uninterrupted visual connections to the surrounding greens.
Block B was designed as a separate residence for the client’s mother during a period of prolonged isolation. Composed of five smaller containers arranged around level variations within the site, the unit houses a bedroom, living area and kitchen while maintaining a sense of independence and intimacy. A lightweight bamboo enclosure subtly defines her private garden edge without disconnecting the home from the larger landscape.
Block C functions as a compact wellness pavilion containing a private gym and workout space shared by the family.
A continuous bamboo parasol stretches above the built volumes, becoming the defining architectural gesture of the project. Beyond offering shade and climatic moderation, the canopy transforms the containers into inhabitable garden pavilions – filtering light, softening scale and allowing the built form to merge with the tree canopy beyond.
Large sliding glass openings, restrained material palettes and low horizontal profiles establish a direct relationship between interior life and landscape. The architecture remains intentionally quiet – allowing changing light, vegetation, weather and occupation to become the primary experience of the retreat.
More than a study in prefabricated living, The Container Homes became an exploration into how architecture could respond to a moment of collective confinement with openness, lightness and emotional refuge.
