THE INHERITANCE HOUSE
Gurgaon, Haryana
Designed for a multi-generational family relocating from Kolkata to Gurgaon, The Inheritance House draws from the spatial memory, values, and rhythms of the client’s ancestral home while responding to the realities of contemporary urban living.
Organised around a skylit double-height volume, the residence creates visual and emotional connections across floors, allowing family members to remain interconnected while maintaining individual zones of privacy. Overlooking corridors, layered living spaces, and deep balconies reinterpret the shared spatial character of traditional Indian homes within a contemporary architectural language.
At the heart of the house, a floating staircase rises against a handcrafted stone installation composed of indigenous Indian stones and a symbolic Tree of Life motif — a gesture that reflects ideas of rootedness, continuity, and generational belonging. More than a decorative element, it serves as a quiet reminder of the family’s origins and the values carried forward across generations.
Externally, the architecture adopts a restrained and monolithic expression, while the interiors unfold as warm, light-filled spaces layered with natural textures, stone, timber, and carefully curated moments of art and craft. The project ultimately becomes less about monumentality and more about inheritance — preserving familiar ways of living, gathering, and belonging while creating a home for the next chapter of the family’s story.
